Q. What is an EMF?
A. An EMF (Electromagnetic Field) is the field of energy that surrounds either:
— a source of electricity, for example, generating stations (including tv and radio transmitters, cell phone towers, police and military transmitters, etc.); alternators in cars, etc., or
— something that uses electricity (appliances, power tools, etc.), or
— conductors of electricity (wiring, whether it’s the power lines outside your house, the wiring of your house, or just the wires that go to your lamps and computers, etc.).
The fields that we are most concerned about come from alternating current (AC). The frequency of the AC in your home is 60 cycles per second. However, AC can and does occur at much higher frequencies as well. No matter what the frequency, all alternating current creates EMFs, and it is these electromagnetic fields that we are concerned with in terms of the effects they have on our health, and on the health of all living matter on the planet.
Q. What are safe levels for EMFs?
A. It is true that the effects of EMF radiation are cumulative. This means that the more one is subjected to EMF radiation, the more sensitive that person is likely to become. This makes setting a rigid standard for EMF radiation safety difficult because what may be safe for one person may not be at all safe for another. Also, one’s sensitivity can change so that one might not be sensitive initially, and then later become very sensitive.
The 2012 BioInitiative Report recommends the safety levels for various kinds of EMFs for an environment of continuous radiation. As is mentioned above, these levels may be far too high for some people, given that people's sensitivities vary a great deal. And given that the effects of EMF radiation are cumulative, and that we are being subjected to ever-increasing levels, it is highly likely that we will all become more and more sensitive to this radiation.
It is now quite clear that our health is being negatively affected on numbers of levels. The list of serious illnesses, as well as conditions of great discomfort, is unfolding as research is deepening into this issue. At this point this list is quite long. For those of you who are interested, there is a great deal of information on the web about this. As an example, let me say that it has been clearly shown that loss of memory and headaches are at the beginning of the list, with various forms of life-threatening diseases such as cancer at the end.
Q. Are children more affected by EMFs than adults?
A. Yes. This is especially true with cell phones and iPads. Although all children are not equally sensitive to EMFs, just like adults, it has been scientifically proven that, because the child's skull is not as thick or as dense an adult's skull, the radiation penetrates more deeply into the brain. Also a child’s brain is in the process of development well into the teenage years and perhaps longer, and EMFs disturb the healthy formation of the brain.
It is also true that the effects of EMFs are cumulative, so the longer a person is subjected to these fields the more sensitized they become, and, of course, a child has more years for this accumulation to occur than someone older. It's also a fact that many cancers take a number of years to form, so the younger you are, the younger you may well be when the cancer shows up. It is a fact that more and more children are getting cancers at earlier and earlier ages.
Q. Are animals more affected by EMFs than adults?
A. It has not been shown that they are more or less affected than humans. And, as with humans, it's an individual issue. Some people and animals are deeply affected, and some far less. It's complex, too, because the effects are cumulative. The more you are subjected to these fields the more sensitive you get, and this is true of your animals as well. It's true, too, that some of the effects take years to show up. Cancer is in this category. There have been reported cases where dogs have left their homes and disappeared after a smart meter was installed at their home. It is true that many animals are more sensitive, not only to higher frequencies of sound than we are, but also to higher frequencies of energy. It has also been reported that cows are very sensitive to electric fields.
Q. What can I do to make my home safer?
A. EMF radiation is bad for the health of your family, your animals, and even your plants. It's important to do your best to lower your exposure to EMF radiation in your home and in your place of work, and for your children in their schools. It's especially important to lower it in places where you spend a lot of time, like your bedroom, your office, and the place where you watch television and movies.
The good news is that you can control a lot of EMF radiation. The common sources of EMF radiation in your home are Wi-Fi, cordless telephones, smart meters, and cell phones. The wiring in your home also emits EMF radiation. All of this can be measured, and shielding can be used to protect you and your family and animals.
In terms of Wi-Fi and cordless telephones, one option is to go back to corded telephones, and to replace Wi-Fi with corded connections. If, however, you feel it's very important for you to have Wi-Fi, just move the transmitter as far away as possible from those places in the house where you spend a great deal of time, and turn it off when you're not using it, as in when you sleep.
Smart meters are another source of EMF radiation in your home, but they can be shielded quite successfully.
It's a good idea if you're renting or buying a home or apartment, to have it checked for EMF fields before you commit to it. And if you're building a home, you can have it wired in such a way that will keep the EMFs down to a very low level. It's not a good idea to move next to cell phone towers, TV and radio station antennas, or police stations, because of the radar and mobile radios that they use. It's also important to be aware of the EMF situation in the schools your children attend. This is easy to check. For instance, do the schools have Wi-Fi?
Our environment is becoming increasingly saturated with various forms of EMFs, and the effect is cumulative. It’s very important, therefore, and a very fortunate thing, that you can control the environment in which you live and work, and in which your children go to school. And I'm here to help you do that.
Q. What if I live in an apartment complex?
A. Living in an apartment complex can subject you to the EMF fields of the apartment above and/or below, as well as the apartments you share walls with. As an example, do your neighbors have Wi-Fi right on the other side of the wall your bed is against?
Another example: Where are all the smart meters for the various apartments? Are they on the outside of the wall of one of the rooms in your apartment where you spend a great deal of time? And, is the house wiring of your floor serving ceiling lights in the apartment below, so that you may well be affected by the magnetic fields from that wiring?
Fortunately, in most cases, various forms of shielding can be used to bring the EMF levels down to the accepted safe levels.

In December 2011, Dr. David O. Carpenter, M.D., Director of the Institute for Health and the Environment at the University at Albany, and an EMF (Electromagnetic Field) subject matter expert, authored an amended declaration on behalf of the plaintiff in Morrison v. Portland Public Schools documenting his view of the impact WiFi radiation has on children attending school. Carpenter’s declaration is richly filled with information on the biological effects of WiFi radiation and his concerns about the safety of wireless devices in schools. He recommends wired solutions, as opposed to WiFi, as a way to safeguard children and maximized learning.

In 2007, fourteen eminent scientists and public health experts reviewed the evidence contained in over 2000 studies about the health implications of electromagnetic fields (EMFs) from power lines, mobile phones, cordless phones, phone masts (cellphone towers), digital baby monitors, wi-fi, and other wireless technologies. The result was the BioInitiative Report. (This Report was updated in 2012.)
This video interview with Cindy Sage, Environmental Consultant, Sage Associates, Santa Barbara, CA, bioinitiative.org, details the dangers of EMFs under current FCC standards.

A PBS radio interview with guests Lloyd Morgan, senior science fellow at Environmental Health Trust, and Cris Rowan, a pediatric occupational therapist in British Columbia, Canada and author of Virtual Child: The terrifying truth about what technology is doing to children.
This interview is a continuation of a week-long series on our hyper-connected world by focusing on children. In 2012, the American Academy of Pediatricians called on the FCC to conduct a “formal inquiry into radiation standards for cell phones and other wireless products” because “standards have generally been based on the impact of exposure on an adult male.” So what do we know about how devices affect the development of children?
From the DVD jacket: Resonance: Beings of Frequency is the first documentary to investigate the actual mechanisms by which mobile phone technology can cause cancer. The film takes a deeper look at how humanity is reacting to the most profound environmental change the planet has ever seen. 2 billion years ago life first appeared on earth, a planet bathed in a natural electromagnetic frequency. As life slowly evolved from simple whole to complex organisms, it did so surrounded by this frequency, forming a harmonic relationship with it, a relationship that science is just beginning to comprehend.
New research is showing that exposure to this frequency is vital to human beings. It controls our mental and physical health, it synchronizes our circadian rhythms, it aids our immune system, and it improves our overall sense of well-being. Not only are we surrounded by natural frequencies, our bodies are suffused with them. Our cells communicate using electromagnetic frequencies. Our brain emits a constant stream of frequencies and our DNA delivers instructions using frequency waves. Without them, we could not exist.
This delicate balance has taken billions of years to perfect. But over the last two or three decades this harmony has been disturbed, and dramatically so. Mankind has saturated itself in an ocean of artificial frequencies. They are all around us, filling the air and overwhelming the Earth's natural resonance. To the naked eye our world appears the same. But at the cellular level it is the most rheumatic change that life on earth has ever endured, and we are only now beginning to understand it.
